General Exam Advice
Grammar and Vocabulary revision is essential for the final exam. Look over your jotters and grammar books to help with this. You will find extensive grammar and vocabulary on the Scholar website- please use this fantastic tool!
We have covered most of the Past Papers in class. There is no harm however in looking over Reading papers and translating certain parts.
For Reading and Listening Papers check out www.sqa.org.uk
You will also find Marking schemes here too.
Reading and Translation
It is important to do Reading and Translation under times conditions.
Use your dictionary when necessary. Don’t look up words you are familiar with or words that are not related to the answer.
Pay close attention to what the question is asking you and also how many marks the question is worth. Remember to be specific in your answer, but don’t waffle!
Take time at the end to look over you answers. Have you written enough to gain the points? Have you used good English?
No blanks! If necessary make an appropriate educated guess.
You have Translation advice in your jotter. Remember to be as accurate as you can. If it does not read back well in English, the chances are you have not conveyed the correct meaning.
Directed Writing
Everyone has the Directed Writing booklet which contains all of the essential phrases. There are also sample essays in there with marking schemes.
Preterite, Imperfect and Conditional Tenses are vital in this essay-please revise them!
Structure your essay in paragraphs. This will make your essay much clearer and easier for you to follow.
Remember to learn set phrases from the book. The key word here is learning! You don’t need to make up phrases on the day; you have everything you need in your booklet.
Make sure you address the information at the top of the Directed Writing. For example if the essay says “you went to the North of Spain on a school exchange and stayed with a Spanish family” ensure that you include this in the essay. Otherwise this will be deemed as irrelevant.
Finally, make sure you address all of the bullet points. If you do not you will be penalised!
Listening and Follow-up Essay
Remember there are lots of Listening files on Scholarnet to practice.
Why not read the transcripts from the SQA website to understand more of the vocabulary given?
With the essay it is important that you are prepared to respond to all the topics we have gone over in class.
Core vocabulary related to the topic is essential. Also, refer back to your jotter for introductions to the essays.
There are certain phrases that can be universally used. Remember this is a personal response to the question and your opinion phrases will be used lots here. Remember to vary your phrases and not stick to just one.
Make sure you relate your response to the question. There may be 2 or 3 questions to refer to, giving you more scope to write.
Please check over your essay at the end. Make sure your grammar is accurate. If you spend a few minutes at the end of the paper this will ensure you have double checked everything.
*PLEASE RETURN ALL HIGHER MATERIALS THAT YOU HAVE ON THE DAY OF YOUR EXAM*
Feel free to come into school to have work marked, ask advice or if you have any exam queries!
¡suerte a todos!
