S2 Pupils have been learning about the French speaking country of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) supported by the excellent resource La Vie en RDC produced by SCIAF. Pupils have been working on the topic of Conflict in Social Subjects and Making Connections and we have looked at conflict in the DRC They worked in groups which used cooperative learning techniques and AiFL techniques. Here is what they did:
1) Pupils labelled a map of Africa to find out where the DRC is, using atlases from the library.(SCIAF worksheet)
2)Pupils read a briefing sheet about DRC and created a mindmap with the key information. They then did a quiz to seehow much they could remember. They learnt new words like refugees, genoicide and infrastrucutre. (SCIAF worksheet)
3)Pupils looked at the concept of conflict in DRC learnt in Social subjects ie. as a disagreement between 2 or more force. They discussed the different sorts of conflict. eg. man versus society, man versus self, man versus nature, man versus man and how this applies to Congo. They created mind maps and reported their ideas to the class.
4) Pupils watched a video on the SCIAF website about the work of SCIAF and answered questions. They did more research about SCIAF for their homework. SCIAF RDC website (own worksheet - Download SCIAF computer research lesson )
5) Pupils watched a video about life in DRC for young people on the SCIAF website and answered questions. This fitted in with work on free time that has been covered in class recently in French. Pupils discussed the similarities and differences between their lives and those of people in RDC. Pupils used the same questions on the website to ask one another about their free time in French. (own worksheets - Download Questions - video question and pupil follow up, Download Questions Fr and Eng Pelmanism - reading activity as preparation / follow up.)
6) Pupils created a radio show about the DRC showing either conflict, young people's lives, information about SCIAF, as well as including typical items such as the news or weather. I gave tutorials to one person from each group on how to use Audacity to record the radio shows and supported them as necessary. Pupils created planning sheets and wrote up scripts. (see below) Example script by pupils - Download Radio show script
7) Pupils listened to each other's radio show on the blog and gave feedback by posting comments. (see blog)
8) Pupils answered an online evaluation of the project to improve it next time. (see blog)
9) Pupils were set the challenge of trying to give something up for lent / a week in aid of the Wee Box campaign as they had found out about this for homework. The money will be donated to SCIAF.
10) Extension activity - pupils look at the photos by Ian Rankin. Photos of people
It has been a great project and has given the pupils to do something different, learn new skills and learn something about somewhere else in the world. It has given pupils a lot to think about and really created some great discussions. Plus there has been some very high quality French with new vocabulary and a chance to revise old vocabulary. I can't wait to do it again!
