Here's a good website to get you reading some 'authentic' German...
Just to remind you that we'll start studying Bahnwärter Thiel next week, so please finish reading it.

Well done to those of you who did well in your vocab check today - I was really pleased with you, particularly with those of you who got 9 or 10 of them correct! However, I was a little disappointed with some of you and the lack of effort that had been put into learning your vocab for today. It is vital that you learn your vocab as what we do now leads on to what we do tomorrow and what we do tomorrow leads on to what we do the next day etc etc.
On a more positive note, it is god to see that you are settling in well to Banff Academy and your behaviour has been very good. Let's keep it that way!
Well done!

Firstly, a reminder that I expect a first draft of your essay by tomorrow - 4(1) - or Thursday - 4(2).
Today, in class, we were looking at larger numbers and how to form them. The most important point for that was that you only put 'und' in between the tens and the units. e.g. tausendfünfhundertzweiundzwanzig.
hundert
zweihundert
dreihundert
vierhundert ...etc.
tausend
zweitausend
dreitausend
viertausend ...etc.
neunhundertneunundneunzig = 999
Can you work out what numbers these are?:
1) vierhundertzweiundachtzig
2) tausendneunhundertzwölf
3) siebenhunderteinundvierzig
4) zwölftausendelf
5) neunhundertneunundneunzigtausendneunhundertneunundneunzig (phew, that's a long word!)
Can you write the following numbers as words in German?
1) 163
2) 2834
3) 7568
4) 8220
5) 15634
*answers to follow in a few days*

This morning, we were looking at prepositions (click on the link for more information about prepositions in English). We learned a chant with some actions to go along with the following prepositions in German:
an
auf
hinter
in
neben
über
unter
vor
zwischen
Hopefully the chant and actions we learned today will help you to remember these prepositions, as we will need to know them for our next few lessons (and, indeed, the rest of your "German-career"!). Can you remember what they mean?
Vocabulary from today:
Zimmer Rooms
der Garten garden
der Keller cellar
die Küche kitchen
die Toilette toilet
das Badezimmer bathroom
das Esszimmer dining room
das Schlafzimmer bedroom
das Wohnzimmer living room
das Zimmer room
*Remember that Badezimmer, Esszimmer, Schlafzimmer and Wohnzimmer are all 'das words' (neuter) because the word Zimmer is a 'das word'.

Today in class we worked on some vocabulary to do with nationalities. We used the following vocabulary:
Nationalitäten Nationalities
Welche Nationalität hat (Jan)? What nationality is (Jan)?
Er ist … He is ...
Sie ist ... She is ...
England
M – Engländer
F – Engländerin English
Italien
M – Italiener
F – Italienerin Italian
Spanien
M – Spanier
F – Spanierin Spanish
Österreich
M – Österreicher
F – Österreicherin Austrian
Frankreich
M – Franzose
F – Französin French
Deutschland
M – Deustscher
F – Deutsche German
Irland
M – Ire
F – Irin Irish
Schottland
M – Schotte
F – Schottin Scottish
Wales
M – Waliser
F – Waliserin Welsh
If you did not finish copying the vocab, please take it from here. We pointed out the differences between the male and the female words for nationalities, and I also pointed out that these differences can be seen in other areas, for example job titles: e.g. Lehrer (male teacher) and Lehrerin (female teacher). Most often, the female word ends in "-in".
At the end of the period, we did an exercise to 'test' your general knowledge!!! How many of the nationalities of the following people did you get right?
Mozart war Österreicher.
Elizabeth 1. war Engländerin.
Napoleon war Franzose.
Goethe war Deutscher.
Florence Nightingale war Engländerin.
Marie Antoinette war Französin.
Robert Burns war Schotte.
Salvador Dali war Spanier.
Well done if you managed to get all 8 correct! I asked you, for Monday, to try and find out a little bit about who these people were. It's not formal homework, but I'd like you to have a look and see what you can find out about them. I'd suggest that a good place to start would be Wikipedia.
Enjoy!
